Rent a Car in Cancun

Renting a car in Cancun can be a fun way to explore the resort region and allows you to be as spontaneous as you'd like. If you've never rented a car in a foreign country, you'll be happy to learn that renting a car in Cancun is fairly simple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Driver's license or International Driver's Permit
  • Credit card
  1. Step 1

Decide which class of rental car will best suit your needs. Most car rental agencies in Cancun offer the standard classes of rental cars, including economy or compact, intermediate or mid-size, standard or full-size, and luxury and premium. Economy cars are suited to accommodate two adults, two children, one large suitcase and two smaller suitcases. Intermediate cars can accommodate two adults, two children, two large suitcases and two small suitcases. Standard cars can fit four adults and several large and small suitcases. Luxury cars can accommodate five adults, and their luggage, comfortably.

  2. Step 2

Determine whether you will need to look for a car-rental agency that offers rental cars that can be driven in to neighboring countries, because not all agencies can accommodate this need. So if you are planning to drive your rental car into the neighboring countries of Belize and Guatemala, you will need to ensure that the car-rental agency you rent from offers specially-licensed vehicles.

  3. Step 3

Call the car-rental agency, or visit its website, to make your car-rental reservation. The car-rental agency representative will ask you for all of your relevant information including name, address and credit card number.

  4. Step 4

Pick up your rental car from the car-rental company. Give the car-rental agency representative your reservation number, present your driver's license or International Driver's Permit, and a major credit card.

  5. Step 5

Complete the checklist you receive from the car-rental agency. The sheet will contain basic information about the car you rented including make, model and mileage. There is also a section on the form where you can record existing damage to the car. Checking the car over and writing down any nicks, scratches, dents or dings will protect you from being asked to pay for them when you return the car.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are planning to use your rental car for extensive driving, be sure to find a car-rental agency that offers car rentals with unlimited miles as opposed to an allotted number of miles per day. An International Driver's Permit is an official travel document that contains your driving information printed in 10 different languages. IDPs can be obtained from your local travel agent or AAA office for approximately $20.
  • If you are between the ages of 18 and 25, you may be required to pay an additional young driver's surcharge.
