Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Fabric
- Thread
- Scissors
- Sewing pins
- Sewing machine
- 1 1/2-inch rod with hardware
- Power drill
-
Step 1
Measure the width of the window to determine how much fabric you will need. Decide how long you want the valance to hang from the top. No more then 10 inches is recommended. Add 2 inches at the top for the rod pocket and 1 inch to the bottom and sides for the hem. If you are making a box pleated valance, you will need to add an additional 2 inches for each pleat.
-
Step 2
Turn the top of the fabric under 1 1/2 inches and place sewing pins along the fold line. Use the sewing machine to sew along the folded edge to create a 1 1/2-inch rod pocket. Sew a 1-inch hem at the bottom and sides. If you are adding trim to the bottom of the valance, sew it on as well.
-
Step 3
Use a power drill to hang the hardware for the rod. The rod should be installed on the outside of the window frame for best results. Thread the rod through the pocket at the top of the valance and hang it on the window.
