How to Troubleshoot a 1999 Cadillac STS

The Cadillac STS is a mid-sized touring sedan. The "STS" stands for "Seville Touring Sedan," as the car was the successor to the Cadillac Seville. The STS was introduced in 2005, revamped in 2006 and then again in 2008. While there are not many faults with the STS, there are a few common problems and complaints. You'll need to troubleshoot the problems and take the car to your dealership to have them fixed.

Instructions

Check the power windows for reliability. An electrical short may develop in the power window regulator due to faulty wiring. This is not part of a recall, but some STS owners have complained about faulty power windows on the driver's side front door.

Check your spark plugs or have them checked by an experienced mechanic. There have been reports of fouled spark plugs and faulty plugs causing a short in the plug wiring and shorting out the distributor. This item will need to be checked and replaced, if necessary. Since a potential problem could be improper fuel mixture or improper gaping of the plugs, an experienced mechanic should inspect all of these areas (spark plugs, plug wiring and distributor).

Have the original alternator checked by an experienced mechanic or serviced under a recall issued by Cadillac. Factory installed alternators may short out causing an electrical fire in the engine bay. The alternator will be replaced free of charge by Cadillac.
