Two-thirds of the plant species or 80 percent in the world are found in the tropical rain forest. Teaching children about the rain forest plants is an opportunity to learn about the habitat of the plants and their individual characteristics and uses. Some plants have medicinal qualities so they are used in making medicine and different products.

How to Teach About Plants of the Rain Forest

  1. Step 1

Hand out lined paper and pencils to the students. Using the sites listed under "Resources," tell students to research one plant of the rain forest. They should write detailed notes about the plants habitat and characteristics. Give them about 15 to 20 minutes to do the research for the advertisement.

  2. Step 2

Hand out blank white paper and tell students to design an advertisement for the plant. The advertisement should have a catchy title or slogan at the top of the page and two paragraphs about the plant's habitat, characteristics, and some of the animals that use it. The slogan should be something that draws attention to the ad. Tell students after they write the slogan and two paragraphs they can draw the plant if they want to. Remind them to write in their own words and talk about positive points of the plant.

  3. Step 3

After they have finished the advertisement have the students read their slogans and advertising copy to the class. Discuss some of the plants and their habitat. Collect the papers and hang the best ones on a rain forest bulletin board.

  4. Step 4

Pass out more lined paper if needed. Using the sites Medicinal Plants of the Amazon Rain Forest and Biomes, have students research a medicinal plant and its uses. They should take notes on the plants habitat and uses in medicine and treatment of disease. Give them about 15 minutes to do the research.

  5. Step 5

Tell students to design a medicine or product from the plant of their own creation. They should give the medicine or product an original name and describe in detail what it does for the person that uses it. Students can also design a package for the product and write instructions for use, including any limits or warnings. After they have finished, have the class read the product names and descriptions.
