Construct a Birdfeeder
Construct a Birdfeeder

A good way to teach children to appreciate nature right in their own backyards is to construct a birdfeeder with them and then see what birds stop by for a treat. You do not need any heavy tools to make one--just a few simple supplies you may already have in your pantry, your junk drawer or even your refrigerator. Adults can make these feeders too and attract more birds to their yards or gardens.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quart-sized carton
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • 10-inch wooden dowel
  • Fishing line
  • Needle
  • Birdseed
  1. Step 1

Empty a quart-sized milk or juice carton and rinse it thoroughly with water. You do not want any residue remaining. Stand the carton on the table in front of you. Choose any side and measure up 2 inches from the bottom. Make a pencil mark here.

  2. Step 2

Draw a square 3 inches high by 3 inches across, making the base of the square pass through that pencil mark. Use the scissors to cut out the square. Repeat this step on the opposite side of the carton.

  3. Step 3

Use the point of the scissors to punch a 1/4-inch hole in the carton 1/2 inch below the center of each square you just cut out. Push your dowel through one hole, making sure it goes through the second hole on the other side of the carton. This is the perch for the birds to stand on. It should stick out the same distance on each side to give the feeder balance.

  4. Step 4

Fill the bottom of the feeder with birdseed. Stop pouring when you reach the bottom of the perch.

  5. Step 5

Thread 4 inches of your fishing line through the eye of your needle. Poke the needle through the top of the carton at the tip of the triangle. (See image.) Feed the fishing line through the top of carton and make a hole on the opposite side to bring the needle out. Pull the needle off the line. Use the fishing line to hang the birdfeeder on the tree branch of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Paint the outside of your birdfeeder and make a Popsicle stick roof. Use nontoxic paint and glue for this task. Use fishing line as opposed to string, since string may not be strong enough to support the feeder when a bird is in it.
  • Do not let children attempt Step 5.
