Many different Internet service options exist. You can stay with the traditional dial-up service or upgrade to a faster connection with wireless or DSL. DSL gains access to a home through the phone line port, although it does not actually take up the line or block any calls. It also uses a wider cable, commonly referred to as a LAN or Ethernet cables. Because these cables are wider, a DSL jack will be needed in order to use it with the phone outlet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • DSL jack
  • Ethernet cable
  1. Step 1

Insert the male end of the DSL jack into the phone outlet. The front side of the DSL jack will have two different available ports--one for the phone line, the other for the DSL connection.

  2. Step 2

Insert the Ethernet cable into its proper port. Attach the other end of the cable into the computer's Ethernet port.

  3. Step 3

Insert the phone line cord into the phone outlet side of the DSL jack. This is only necessary for those who want to have a phone connection in the particular room as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all DSL jacks have a provided port for a phone line.
