It all started for the Stihl family when Andreas Stihl invented a chainsaw in 1926. Today, Stihl chainsaws are one of the most familiar brands. All chain saws basically look the same with their motor, bar and cutting chain. But there are ways to spot a Stihl.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Safety goggles
  • Hearing protection
  • Work gloves
  • Fuel
  1. Step 1

The colors on a Stihl chainsaw are always bright orange and black with the name Stihl on the bar. Color alone isn't enough, though: Echo and Husqvarna chainsaws also are orange and black.

  2. Step 2

Check the fuel level. If the tank is transparent, making it unnecessary to remove the cap to check the level, it may be a Stihl. All the company's chainsaws use transparent tanks.

  3. Step 3

Open the fuel tank to add fuel. The fuel cap--as well as the bar-oil cap--on a Stihl chainsaw open easily without the use of tools.

  4. Step 4

Put on your safety goggles. As you start sawing, if it's a Stihl, bumper spikes on the front of the body will help you control the chain.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before you operate a chainsaw, clear the area of children and pets. Don't use a chainsaw without safety goggles, hearing protection, work gloves, and other safety gear if you're felling trees. Use caution with fuel; never add fuel while the engine is running.
