Balance on your hands and head on your longboard and you'll achieve immortality.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Practice headstands on your board on the beach. Make a triangle with your hands and your head. Your elbows should be bent at right angles. Place your knees on your elbows, and then extend your legs straight up.

  2. Step 2

Get up and riding on a wave. Only attempt a headstand if you know the wave in front of you is peeling smoothly down the line.

  3. Step 3

Crouch low, or even get down on your knees on your board, and place your hands on either side of the board somewhere near the middle. Your palms should be on the top of the board with just your fingers curling over the edge.

  4. Step 4

Place the top of your head down on the board, forming a three-pointed triangle with your hands.

  5. Step 5

Push your legs up quickly into a headstand. Hold and relax. Don't worry about the wave; just think about the headstand.

  6. Step 6

Let your legs down in the exact reverse of how you brought them up, so that they land on the board.

  7. Step 7

    Stand up and continue riding.

Tips & Warnings
  • The bigger and more stable your board is, the easier this trick will be. A foam Doyle is definitely best for learning headstands.
  • Do not try this on a shortboard.
  • You need a consistent wave to learn to do a headstand. Find a mellow and consistent reef that peels for a long distance.
  • If you feel yourself falling forward over the nose of your board, bend at the waist and roll sideways. If you do fall over the nose, the water will stop your motion and your board will run you over. So duck or find yourself experiencing an Excedrin moment.
  • Surfboarding is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
