How to Convert Audio Books Into Text

Audio books make it possible to listen to the message that is being told rather than having to read the text. This is beneficial for anyone who wants to experience the power of a book while in the car or listening with headphones. However, you may not always have access to a set of speakers or a way to play your audio books. Converting your audio books into text will allow you to read the text anywhere you want to be.

  • Go to the "Start" menu of your computer and click on the "Control Panel." Click on the icon of a microphone that says "Speech Recognition Options."

  • Click the option that says "Set Up Your Microphone," found in the main menu. Make sure that your microphone is plugged in and installed correctly. Click the radio button next to the type of microphone that you have. These options include a headset microphone, a desktop microphone or other microphones, including ones that are built into your computer. Click "Next" when you have selected your microphone.

  • Position your microphone just a few inches from where you are, then speak the command: "Open Word Pad." Word Pad will now open up.

  • Place the microphone in front of your speakers; place it not so far away that it will have difficulty picking up sound, and not so close that it causes distortion.

  • Play the audio book that you want to record. The text will now appear in Word Pad. Save your Word Pad Document once the audio book has finished playing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Voice recognition software will only be able to record the text that is being played. You will have to manually add in punctuation. Other kinds of voice recognition software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking will also perform this task.
