Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Telephone
  • Social Security number
  • Driver's license
  • Copier
  • Scanner
  • Folders
  1. Step 1

Contact the bank your mortgage is with. Contact the loan officer who assisted you with your mortgage agreement if possible. Otherwise, ask for a senior loan officer at the bank.

  2. Step 2

Ask the senior loan officer for a copy of your mortgage agreement. Make sure you tell the senior loan officer when you signed the mortgage agreement and how long the agreement was for. You might need to make a formal request with a short letter. If the bank requires your request be in writing, make a copy of the letter for your records. You will also need to confirm the address of the property the mortgage agreement covers.

  3. Step 3

Present to the senior loan officer a copy of your driver's license and your Social Security number to validate who you say you are. Once you have presented this information to the loan officer, you should be able to obtain a copy of your mortgage agreement. The bank may have you fill out a form or sign something acknowledging your request for another copy.

  4. Step 4

Make two copies of your mortgage agreement and put them in separate files in your records. This way, if you lose one of the copies, you will still have another one.

  5. Step 5

Scan your mortgage agreement onto your computer so you also have a digital file. This will make it easy to find and access if you need to quickly refer to the agreement. Name the digital file "Mortgage Agreement" and the date of the actual agreement. You might need to refer to it in case you have questions regarding your particular rights and obligations. You might also need to produce it to prove some right or obligation. In addition, if you want to refinance your mortgage, you will need to produce a copy of your mortgage agreement.
