How to Keep a Conversation Going on a Date
Dating presents an opportunity for all of us to balance the notion of entertaining someone while getting to know that person at the same time. Talking on a date is a good way to find out information about the other person while presenting some of your own stories as well, all in an effort to get to know each other better. The art of keeping a conversation going on a date means that nervousness has to be overcome to spark dialogue that is inclusive to both parties.

1
Prepare some topics of discussion ahead of time. Reviewing some current events before going on the date can give you some topics to bring up when the time comes. Make sure that you look for stories that interest you first so that you will sound genuine when bringing up the initial points. This will also agree with your personality, allowing the other person to see you for who you really are.

2
Introduce new aspects or points of reference. When you both arrive at a topic that appears to be mutually interesting, don't be afraid to examine the topic from many different angles. You don't have to beat the conversation to death by lingering on it too long, but don't be afraid to bring up points about the topic that intrigue you or encourage input.

3
Expand the topic horizon. Talk about more than one topic when you are on a date. This is especially important when it is a first date or the first time you have had an opportunity to talk. Sex, beliefs, religion, politics and interests are all good topics to bring up when trying to know someone better on a date.
-
4
Change the subject. Stopping at one subject during a date conversation can make you sound one-dimensional. You will also need to keep your finger on the proverbial pulse of the conversation to pick up when a subject may be making your date uncomfortable. Knowing when to change a worn-out subject or when to avoid a topic of conversation altogether is important to preserving the conversation.
-
5
Ask probing questions. Questions that spark your date the right way will give responses that require more than a simple "yes" or "no." Posing questions to your date will also let her know that you are interested in what she has to say. Ask your date questions about herself or her opinions without being too annoying. You don't want your questions to sound like a police interrogation, even though you are trying to find out information.

Tips & Warnings
Humor is always a good way to break the ice. Try memorizing a funny joke or two to tell on your date to start the conversation.
It is better to keep silent than to bring up topics that you know will make your date uncomfortable or make the situation awkward.
