1
Determine what size opener you need. Measure the door height with a tape measure. The door opener needs to open the door height. If you have a seven foot high door, a seven foot opener is required.

2
Consider the door width and height. This will make a difference in determining the motor size required. Using a tape measure, find out what the door width is. Most single car garage doors 10-foot wide and smaller only need a 1/3 horsepower opener. Double wide garage doors over 10-foot wide do better with a ½ horsepower garage door opener.

3
Decide on the drive system desired on the opener. Screw drive openers are less noisy and require little maintenance. Chain driven openers are more popular and less expensive. The chain rattles which makes the opener noisy.
-
4
Choose a wall button. These are the buttons that will be located on the wall in the garage by the entryway from the house. They can be simple like a doorbell button or more elaborate to allow you to lock the motor and have a little added security.
-
5
Consider a keyless entry kit when purchasing a garage door. These help when the power goes out and you need to disconnect the opener from the door while you are outside of the garage. A key dislodges the pull cable through the door so you can pull the emergency release to free the door from the opener.

6
Do it yourself or hire a contractor. Most garage door openers are relatively simple to put together with very detailed instructions included. If you are not comfortable with that, a contractor can be hired to install the opener.
