Chatting with people from other countries has become much easier through technology -- especially with the invention of the Internet chat room. People go online and join numerous conversations in any number of chat rooms, which are enabled by various Web sites that bring in people from far-flung locales. To join a chat, you must first become a member of the Web site and create a username and password to log in with. From there, you can join a chat-room discussion or create a room of your own to talk to people from all over the world.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet service
  1. Step 1

Set up an account with ICQ.com. This site specializes in linking online chatters with others from countries worldwide. After setting up an account, choose a country. This will allow you to chat with those from that particular country as well as others interested in talking with people from the same country.

  2. Step 2

Set up a Facebook or MySpace account. Both Web sites offer ways for people from all over the world to chat online with each other. After signing up, create a page designed with photos and information about yourself. Then you will need to invite people as your friend before being able to talk with them online. You can do a search to find people from other countries on either Web site.

  3. Step 3

Join an international dating chat room. There are various sites that specialize in matching people who want to talk to each other from other countries, such as internationalsdating.com (see Resources). Many people use these type of dating Web sites to talk with people from other countries and develop friendships or relationships.

  4. Step 4

Go to woome.com, where you can post on their Web site the Internet location of a chat session that you want people from other countries to join. You will be the host of your own chat room, but you must sign up first by developing a "wooname" or nickname that you want to go by in the chat room. To get started, you will need to submit your email address.

  5. Step 5

Become an international pen pal. Go to Interpals.net to develop a page with photos and a short bio that will tell others where you are from. Explain your interests, what language you speak, and where you live. You can talk to many people from other countries who want to learn English and/or any other language you may speak.

Tips & Warnings
  • When chatting with people from other countries be respectful of each person and their culture.
  • Before giving your email address to a Web site, read its privacy policy to make sure that you will not be sent promotional emails. Make sure that the Web sites also block others on the chatting sites from seeing your email to help protect your identity. Once an individual has your email address they can try to break your email password, then pilfer your personal information and possibly make you a victim of identity theft.
