How to Clean Acrylic Bathtubs

Acrylic is one common material for modern bathtubs. It comes in many colors, is lighter than bathtubs with a porcelain finish and is just as easy to keep clean. You'll need no special cleaners for these bathtubs; however, although most acrylic tubs are scratch-resistant, you should clean them with soft sponges or towels and avoid scouring pads. Depending on how frequently the tub is used, a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning should be sufficient for preventing soap scum buildup and for keeping these tubs sparkling. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. How to Clean Acrylic Bathtubs

    • 1

Remove the bath mat, if applicable. Fill the bathtub with approximately 1 inch of warm water (you can use less if you'd like to conserve water).

    • 2

Dampen a soft clean sponge in the water. Pour at least 1 tbsp. of liquid dish detergent or hand soap on the sponge and wipe it over the rim of the tub.

    • 3

Scrub the sides of the bathtub with the soapy sponge. If the tub is very dirty, you may need to rinse the sponge in the warm water and reapply soap whenever the sponge becomes soiled.

    • 4

Wash the floor of the tub with the sponge. It may be easier to do this by climbing into the tub to scrub it, but that is not necessary. After you've scrubbed the tub floor once, let the water drain out so you can make sure you've cleaned the floor well enough. If not, scrub it again (if grime is exceptionally difficult, use an acrylic-safe commercial cleaner).

    • 5

Rinse the sponge again and wipe down the faucet. If soap scum has built up, spray the faucet with a soap scum cleaner and scrub it clean.

    • 6

Turn on the bathtub faucet. Get a clean sponge, or rinse out the one you were using, and wipe down the faucet and the entire tub with clean water.

Tips & Warnings

  • In place of detergent or hand soap, you can use shampoo or body wash to clean the tub.

  • Do not clean your acrylic tub with solvents. This includes any chemical used to thin paints or remove adhesives. Also avoid aggressive cleaners that are safe to use on porcelain but not safe for acrylic surfaces. These cleaners may damage the acrylic surface.
