Managing Fall Allergies
Managing Fall Allergies

Fall allergies can be as annoying as spring allergies. The triggering factors may be different, but the symptoms are just as bothersome. Runny noses, itchy throats, and watery eyes threaten to become a way of life for those with allergies. Ragweed allergy is considered to be the most common type of allergy of the season, often made worse by mold spores, and dust mites. With a plan of action in place, fall allergies can be managed to a point where they don't disrupt daily life. Here is how.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Allergy mask
  • Indoor air purifier with HEPA filter
  • Vaccum cleaner with HEPA filter
  • Vinegar
  • Borax
  • Tea tree oil
  • Apples
  • Onions
  1. Step 1

Avoid the outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM. These are considered to be peak pollen hours. Keep windows closed during these hours. The same goes for car windows during commutes too.

  2. Step 2

Wear a mask, or even a small scarf or a handkerchief over your nose while raking leaves or doing other yardwork. Stagnant piles of leaves may contain mold spores that can excerbate fall allergies.

  3. Step 3

Manage mold indoors by controlling humidity. Run fans in moisture prone areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Use natural cleansers in these areas like vinegar, borax, and tea tree essential oil to discourage growth of mold.

  4. Step 4

Shower after spending time outdoors or after doing yardwork. Pollen collects on hair, skin, and clothes. Change into fresh clothes after showering.

  5. Step 5

Rinse out your nose everyday by turning it towards the shower spray. This step has really helped minimize my seasonal allergies. As an alternative, use a nasal saline spray or a neti pot.

  6. Step 6

Consider investing in an indoor air purifier to improve the quality of air indoors. An indoor air purifier with a HEPA filter fiters out allergens and can go a long way in reducing fall allergies.

  7. Step 7
    Eat quercetin rich apples
    Eat quercetin rich apples

Eat quercetin rich foods regularly. Quercetin is a bioflavanoid that is known for its role in preventing and treating allergies. Red onions, berries, and apples are some of the richest sources of the nutrient. Alternatively, take a quercetin supplement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a vaccum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
  • Monitor pollen counts and pollen types in your area
  • Steer clear of the outdoors on windy days if you suffer from ragweed allergies!
