How to Keep Pests Out Of Your Home

Pest control can at times seem quite a challenge. But if you go about the right way it's actually easier than you might think to keep pests under control and outdoors where they belong.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

One good method for home pest control is to stop them from getting inside in the first place. To do this you're going to need to purchase some caulking and take a little time to seal any cracks or holes around the foundation of your home. Larger areas should be stuffed with steel wool to help keep the mice out.

  2. Step 2

    Your closets and pantry:
Cedar chips work great to keep bugs and moths out of your pantry and closets. I also like to use cedar mulch around the flowerbeds and foundation of my home.

  3. Step 3

    Counter tops:
If your counter tops are being invaded by ants you can quite easily kill them and clean up the mess with some vinegar. Don't forget to break up the line at the same time. You can do this by sprinkling some salt or baby powder across the line and the ants won't cross it.

  4. Step 4

    Get rid of spiders:
Most of the spiders that find their way indoors are completely harmless. But at the same most of us really don't want to share our home with them. Try scattering a few hedge apples (osage orange) around the house to repel spiders. My two cats also do a good job of keeping the spider population down.

  5. Step 5

    Repel mice and rats:
For mice probably the best deterrent is a cat. A lot of times just having a cat in the house will deter them from coming indoors. Another good mouse deterrent is peppermint oil, mice hate the smell and will do their best to avoid it. So you might think about planting some around the foundation of your home. You can also soak some cotton balls in peppermint oil and place in areas where the mice are making their way indoors.

  6. Step 6

    Keep things clean:
Mice and insects are attracted to food and clutter. So to keep pests out of your home, you're going to want to make sure that's there's no clutter or trash or even food crumbs left lying around.
