Tips on finding job in less traditional way

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

In years past the traditional methods for job hunting were finding job openings in newspaper and mailing in your resumes or going to companies and filling out applications. Today the traditional method for job hunting is find job opportunities on job boards and email your resume or positing your resume to the job boards and wait for the employers to come to you. One problem I find with this new method is I get job offers outside my geographical area on a semi-regular basis.
Since I am not willing to relocate or commute more than 30 miles for work I had to find a few other methods.

  2. Step 2

One method I have found to be great is using maps to look for companies in my field.
    Here’s how:
    Go to Yahoo Maps
Enter your street address in box A
In the box “Find a business on the map” enter industry – for my search I used telecommunication
Once the list of companies comes up go to the company website.
Example: I went to the website of one of the companies that came up in my search, I went to their careers page and found they had installation job penings.

  3. Step 3

Another method I use is just visiting the websites of the companies I had heard good things about to see if they had jobs openings.

I have found both these methods to be helpful in my recent job search and less frustrating as I am only getting interviews at local companies instead of only companies all over the country. Please keep in mind though that I still have my resume posted on several sites as I do not want to miss any opportunity.
