Remove a Scratch From Wood Furniture

Have a great piece of wood furniture that has been damaged from minor scratching? You don't have to spend top dollar on an expensive product to fix it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

There are a number of common household products you can try in order to remove a scratch from wood furniture. Depending on how deep the scratch is and what color grain of wood, you will have to determine what is going to work best, but here are some tips.

  2. Step 2

Take one teaspoon of instant coffee and dissolve it into one teaspoon of water. Rub gently into the scratch. Allow to dry.

  3. Step 3

Another method is to take a walnut or an almond, and rub the meat of the nut into the scratch. Be careful to rub in the direction of the scratch and only within the scratch in order to minimize the chance of discoloring any surrounding wood.

  4. Step 4

An eyebrow pencil from a woman's makeup kit can also do the trick. Be sure to match the color of the wood up carefully with the color of the pencil and follow the direction of the scratch when applying.

  5. Step 5

A crayon is another option. Simply match up the right color. This one can be reversed since you can always remove the crayon wax from the scratch if you don't like how it looks.

  6. Step 6

Shoe polish is another household item that you can try. Polishes come in many colors these days so you should be able to find one that matches the color of your wood. Dab some paste onto a Q-Tip and apply carefully to the scratch.

  7. Step 7

If all else fails, you can purchase a marker that contains wood stain and is specifically meant for touch up jobs. You can pick one of these up at your local home improvements store.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful when using something like shoe polish that could easily discolor wood surrounding the scratch during application.
