The first thing you need to do is to type in to your web browser the following website: www.safelink.com This will pull up the right website for the service that the government is providing to give free cell phones to low income families or to people who can't afford to have a contract. "Through our Lifeline Service you will receive FREE cellular service, a FREE cell phone, and FREE Minutes every month! SafeLink Wireless Service does not cost anything - there are no contracts, no recurring fees and no monthly charges."

The next step you need to do is enter your zip code to see if you qualify or to see if your state qualifies. They have not got every single state signed up on this yet, but they are getting close to it.
The following is the list of the states they currently have on the program: Alabama, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. I'm disabled and attempting to live on my late husband's (a veteran) death benefits. Believe me, I am not buying expensive cuts of meat or fancy seafood or getting my nails done. I used to live the good life but that's over now. When you have walked a mile in my shoes then you can feel free to make those kinds of comments. It's nice to know that if I need to call for an ambulance (again), I will always have access to a phone.

I hope that those of you making the smart alec comments never have the NEED to apply for a free cellphone. People need these in order to make contact to GET A JOB... for EMERGENCY purposes....you know, they're not all living in a nice warm cushy home like some, no, alot of them are actually HOMELESS and can't get a phone because they don't HAVE AN ADDRESS.....and it's happening to people just like those of you snubbing your nose at them. Oh, and PS....if you're wondering how some of them can apply online or post a comment here? It's called the computers at the LIBRARY, or their local career one stop (for those of you in northern states this is equal to Job Service....) Again, I truly hope it never happens to you, it can happen in the blink of an eye...God Bless all of you.
