Till your garden soil
Till your garden soil

Want the most out of your garden this year? Keeping the soil loose by tilling is one of the most important steps to a successful garden. Let's get started.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

If you're tilling a new area, remove any debris that would interfere with tillers operation. Any grass should be mowed as low as possible.

  2. Step 2

Set your tiller to make a shallow pass at first. This breaks up the sod and makes it easier for the next step.

  3. Step 3

Using your garden rake, remove loose sod and set aside. Set your tiller to the next deepest setting.

  4. Step 4

Continue this process until your tiller is digging 6-8" of soil. Any rocks you encounter should also be set aside.

  5. Step 5

Once you can easily pass through your new or existing plot, now is the perfect time to incorporate any amendments and fertilizers.

  6. Step 6

You are now ready to plant. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • All grass sod to be disposed of can be easily mulched with a mower. Evenly distribute sod over ground and make several passes, beginning with your highest mower setting. This will be a dusty operation.
