1
Measure your niche's width, depth and height. Decide on how many shelves you would like in your niche. I suggest going with at least 3 shelves, so it looks like a built-in bookcase.

Once you have all your measurements, go to a local hardware store or home improvement store like Home Depot or Lowes. They usually sell shelves with all the materials; however, if there is not one that fits your niche, the store will usually help trim down the wood for you. Make sure each shelf is long enough to reach all three sides of the niche. Once you have all of your shelves fitted, you should be ready to put them up.

Have a pencil, ruler, screwdriver, wall fixings, hammer and level ready when installing your shelves. Mark lightly with a pencil where you want to install your brackets. They should be about 4 inches from the edges of the shelf. Start with the highest shelf first. You may need to drill plugs or anchors depending on what type of wall you're putting these shelves on. Hold your brackets in place and secure the screws into the wall using a screwdriver. Continue with the rest of the brackets and make sure the brackets are leveled, then place the shelves onto each bracket--and Voila!--you've created your own bookcase.

You can paint or cover the shelves with wallpaper to make it fit your home furnishings. Try painting the back wall of the niche a darker color to make the shelves stand out.
