Instructions

There are requirements that need to be met for a TEACH Grant. A few of the main requirements for the TEACH Grant is the ability to teach in a high-need field. These high-need fields include bilingual education, foreign language, mathematics, reading specialist, science and special education. The goal is to teach these high-need fields in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students.

Anyone who has interested should contact the school/college of choice to see if they participate in the program. At this point not all schools participate but this shoud be changing soon.

The other requirement is to teach for at least four out of the eight years directly after receiving your teaching degree. Those four years have to be spent teaching at a school considered "low income" or Title One. If this requirement is not met then the TEACH Grant is converted into a Federal Direct Unsubsized Stafford loan, meaning that it will need to be repaid.

The last step is to actually see if this is something that you would like to pursue. If it is then by all means look at the school that you are currently teaching or would like to teach. See if they are considered Title 1. Then look at colleges that participate in the TEACH Grant program.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the requirements are not met then the grant turns into a loan.
