Step 1
The fall is the perfect time to go through rush. Many sororities are taking a pledge class and the school year is fresh and new. If you've just arrived at your university campus, it is a fabulous way to meet people. Rushing, and ultimately pledging a sorority is a huge decision. You will be investing lots of time, emotion and money into the sisterhood you decide on. The friendship and shared experiences are priceless... just be sure to give lots of thought to the commitment prior to getting involved in rush week.
-
Step 2
The first big step is signing up for rush. You are often required to check out each organization before continuing on with the rushing process. Typically, this involves signing into each rush party or house. This can be a bit intimidating so it's really great to rush with a group of friends or girls from your dorm. Even if you are not going to pledge the same final sorority... it still helps tremendously to go through rush with friends!
-
Step 3
So, now you're going to see, up close, what each sorority has to offer. Keep an open mind... you might go into rush with a clear vision of the sorority you want to join but often you'll be surprised how you really like other groups as well. That's what rush is for... check out your options!
-
Step 4
Sororities are a great way to network both at school and in your later professional life. Is the sorority you are considering local or national? Are there many girls in your major? Does the sorority have a strong history on campus? Are they well received by your professors? All these are questions to consider prior to the final step of accepting a bid.
-
Step 5
As you go through rush, be certain that you can accommodate sorority into your academic schedule. Are your grades strong? It's really important that you find the balance needed in your schedule to take on all that is involved in pledging. Don't be afraid to ask sisters questions about the time typically involved in their pledge program.
-
Step 6
Financially, some sororities can be quite expensive. There are dues that are required that you may need to ask your parents to pay for. If this is the case, can you make the financial commitment that is required? Do some research ... parents are often more likely to help with the finances if they know more about the sorority. Often, sororities have alumni who will answer any questions that parents might have. These older alumni are frequently parents themselves and will really be helpful in going over details.
-
Step 7
Be yourself! Cannot say it enough... I know it sounds obvious and you want to make a terrific impression but you'll be spending lots of time with your sorority. LOTS of time. As a member, you're part of a large group that makes a strong impression on campus. Be sure you are comfortable with that and you share some common ideas and goals. You don't want to feel as though you cannot relax and let your real self shine. If they are the right sorority for you... you'll know it... you'll feel like you belong right away.
-
Step 8
Best of luck ... rushing is a terrific way to meet people. If you decide to pledge, you're on your way to being part of a great Greek experience. Should you decide to wait, you now have a much clearer vision of sorority life on your campus and possibly you'll go on to pledge another semester.
