Brewing Ginger Beer at home is fairly easy and requires basically six ingredients and very little preparation. Here are the steps to make a simple ginger beer at home:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Yeast
  • Ginger
  • Lemon juice
  • Lime juice
  • Sugar
  • 2-ltr clean bottle (or larger)
  • funnel
  • 1 med. saucepan
  • 1 lg. saucepan
  • strainer
  1. Step 1

In a med. saucepan, combine 1 1/2 qts. water, 1 cup sugar, 4 tablespoons each of lemon and lime juice and a 1/2 cup of finely ground ginger. Bring to a boil and let it gently simmer for 30 min. Remove from heat for 10 min.

  2. Step 2

Mix 3/4 cup warm water with 1/4 tsp. bakers yeast (not brewers yeast) in a small bowl and set aside.

  3. Step 3

Pour 2 1/2 cups cold water into the 2nd large saucepan. Add the yeast water and stir. Use a strainer to add in the mixture from the first saucepan. Stir well.

  4. Step 4

Use a funnel to pour the mixture into a clean bottle, leaving at least one inch from the top. Seal tightly and let sit at room temperature for 24 hours to ferment, then transfer to the refrigerator.

Once it's cold it's ready to enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can experiment with flavors like dried hibiscus or other herbals.
  • If you allow the beer to ferment more than 24 hours, more sugar will result in a less sweet flavor and a higher alcohol content.
  • Honey can be substituted for sugar
  • Check your bottle every 4-6 hrs, especially if it's in an area that is more than 65-70 degrees. The warmer it is, the more gas can build up.
  • Gas bubbles can be released if necessary by unscrewing the lid slowly.
