How to Build a Permanent Shower Bench
This method builds a permanent shower bench that will not rot. Lets face facts, grout leaks when it cracks. While the wood frame method is easier it will also rot over time. Also the empty space beneath the bench is a common area that mold grows. Replacing wood benches has been increasingly common lately. This is the method custom home builders prefer in master bathroom showers. Does this Spark an idea?

1
PREP THE SHOWER AREA
If you are remodeling an existing shower bench, remove the old bench entirely. Remove the old tile and backer board first. If there is a rubber pan nailed to the shower's framing, then carefully remove all nails to avoid ripping it. Remove all of the old framing. Clean all trash from the work area. Inspect the rubber pan for damage. Repair any damage. A home improvement store will carry a glue designed for this. -
2
CONSTRUCT THE SOLID BASE
A permanent shower bench requires solid construction. Place one row of cinder blocks, holes up, where the bench will sit. Start with the out side corner and work in to the walls. Adjust the spaces between the block so that hole blocks are used. Three block is a common size. Install a second row. Now the bench is at least 16 inches tall, 16 inches deep and 24 inches wide. If there is a rubber pan it should lay against the outside of the bench. -

3
INSTALL TILE BACKER BOARD
Measure and cut the cement board. The object here is to fully wrap the sides of the bench. After cutting make some thinset. Apply the thinset to the cement blocks with a tile setting trowel. Place the cement boards against the wet thinset. Use a level and hammer to tap the boards plum. Keeping everything plum will give you a quality remodeling job. Let the thinset dry before you continue. -
4
FINISH THE BASE AND SET THE SEAT
Mix the mortar in a bucket. Fill all holes in the cinder block. The purpose here is to create a solid concrete bench so mold cannot grow inside. Once the holes are filled to the top mix some thin set. Apply a thick layer to the top. Install a piece of cement board over the top. Use a level and hammer to tap the front of the lid creating a slope for the bench. -
5
TILE AND FINAL TOUCH UPS
The last step to remodeling your new shower bench is laying tile. Install the top row around the bench walls first, cuts next to the wall. Continue down to the floor. Finish with the bench top. With a sanding stone smooth all sharp edges and corners. Grout the tile. Allow everything to dry. Caulk the corners and you are done.
