Healthy Homemade Cat Food in bulk

A recipe for healthy homemade cat food in bulk. Great for all cats especially cats with diabetes. Make it, freeze it, pull it out when you need it. Your cats will love it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Big bowl
  • Food processor
  • 10 pounds raw ground beef
  • 3 pounds cooked roast
  • 2 heads fresh spinach
  • water
  • salt
  • freezer safe containers
  1. Step 1

Cook roast or steaks or whatever kind of beef you choose. The cooked roast is for flavor and texture so your cats will like the food right away. Try to get a nice brown crisp on the outside, it adds tons of flavor.

  2. Step 2

Wash spinach and run through food processor. Add water to make a green shake like consistency. Use as much water as needed to get it ground up. Put ground spinach in the big bowl and add about 3 tablespoons of salt. Mix well.

  3. Step 3

Cut roast into smaller pieces and run through food processor a few pieces at a time. You do not have to grind it up too fine but just try to get the big chunks ground up so it distributes well into the rest of the ingredients. Add to spinach mixture in the big bowl.

  4. Step 4

Unwrap ground beef and add to spinach and roast mixture in the big bowl. Add a couple cups of water to assist in mixing. Extra water will not hurt the recipe. I suggest using your hands for mixing. Grab mixture and squeeze it through your clenched fist. Make sure there are no spinach clumps, as our cats are only eating it because YOU know it's good for their digestion and we are hiding it in the beef.

  5. Step 5

Fill plastic (tupperware style) containers or freezer bags with the cat food and freeze. Leave one container in the fridge for the daily feedings. When you get low, take a container out of the freezer, put it in the fridge to thaw. That will take a day or so, so stay on top of it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Serving suggestions: About 1/2 cup twice a day per cat.
  • The whole cat food making process only takes about 20 minutes once you get the hang of it (and once the roast is done), so don't worry.
  • You may substitute broccoli for spinach but only use FRESH ingredients. The greens are for fiber so kitty has good digestion.
  • Add salt to taste. Some (most) cats are used to LOTS of salt in their typical CORNMEAL cat food, so add more to start them off then back off a bit when they have made the transition.
  • Go ahead - Taste it! It's good stuff. I have added it to my scrambled eggs when I had nothing else in the fridge.
  • You may need to add more cooked beef for a while if your kitty is very finicky. Or you may choose to zap a serving for your cat until its almost cooked. LET IT COOL and let kitty enjoy a gourmet cooked meal to get her started on the new diet.
  • WARNING: Our cats are CARBOHOLICS!
  • They have been raised on CORNMEAL and they DO NOT like the lack of carbs in the new diet. If you eat carbs - THEY MIGHT HUNT YOU DOWN AND STEAL THEM.
  • Put away all carbohydrates that are usually left on the counter, as they will be broken into at some point. Bread, chips, cookies etc.
  • Avoid giving into the pressure! Throw away the old cat food. The days of "junk food" for your cat are over.
  • Your cat WILL be able to make the change and they will LOVE dinner time for the rest of their long lives.
  • FELINE DIABETES /DIABETIC CATS: You can literally SAVE your cat's life and REVERSE the feline diabetes that your cat is suffering from. I DID IT. My cat was --> <-- this far from dying and the vet said he would be on insulin forever (then he recommended a very expensive CORNMEAL cat food on the shelf). I chose another route and all 4 of my cats, including coma-kitty are now very healthy, happy and CORMEAL / CARB FREE!
  • CAT FOOD MAY TURN GREEN after a few days in the fridge - Do not worry, it's the spinach. If the cat food starts to smell ripe after a while, you can decide how ripe is too ripe to feed your cats. Remember, they eat rodents and lick their butts, a little aged beef is hardly a problem for them.

on 9/29/2009 This recipe is incomplete. Cats need many more vitamins than you are stating in this recipe. Also - raw, ground beef is full of bacteria. I work in the food industry - ground meat is the worst. So, if you use it - cook it first!
