Metal studs have a variety of applications in heavy industry and machinery, and are widely used to attach clean metal sheeting to other parts, such as a metal pole or flange. This task can be accomplished easily within a matter of seconds with a welding gun. It's important to be very considerate of your own safety and the safety of others before beginning a welding project.
Put on all proper personal protection equipment (PPE) to prepare yourself for welding. This includes a helmet with a filter lens, safety goggles, protective gloves, boots and heavy, non-flammable clothing to protect you from sparks. You may choose to leave off the gloves at this time, but put them back on before operating the welding gun. Make sure every inch of your body is covered.
2
Connect the weld cable to the welding gun. Connect the welding gun to the power source. Your power source should be direct current (DC) if working with steel and stainless steel, or alternating current (AC) if working with metals such as aluminum or magnesium.
3
Tighten the C clamp to the surface of the metal sheeting to be welded. Run the grounding cable away from the C clamp and your work area so that the area is effectively grounded, reducing electrical concerns. Remove any paint from the area that the C clamp is attached to with sanding equipment.
4
Load the stud onto the welding gun chuck. Put your protective gloves back on at this time.
5
Hold the welding gun perpendicular to the metal sheeting, holding the stud firmly against the metal surface. Activate the welding gun to weld the stud directly to the surface of the metal sheeting. The actual weld will take less than one second to form.
Tips & Warnings
Be very cautious when performing welding work and make sure to wear protective clothing at all times. Welding work requires a lot of electricity and causes extreme heat and sparks, increasing the risk of electrical burns, shocks or fire.
