Step 1
Gather your materials. You’ll need a piece of 12-inch by 18-inch medium weight fabric for each placemat. Fabric stores have a huge assortment of colors and themes (alphabets, farms, animal skins, fairies, pirates, etc.), and the clerk can help you purchase the right amount if you show her the dimensions and the number of kids’ placemats you plan to make. You’ll also need a roll of laminating film at least 16 inches wide and sharp scissors. If you plan to personalize your placemats, you’ll also need fabric markers or fabric paint.

Step 2
Prepare the fabric. Cut the fabric to size. If your kids’ placemats will be personalized such as with their names or a letter of the alphabet, use your fabric paints or markers to add the personalization.

Step 3
Finish the kids’ placemats. Press each fabric piece between two pieces of laminating film, following the instructions on the laminating film’s package. Make sure you’ve cut the film about two inches wider than the fabric on all edges. Use your scissors to trim the excess laminating film to about a half inch from the edge of the fabric.
