How to Cut/copy Text or Image With Windows

Cut/copy is used to move text/image from any source (Word document, web page, etc.) to another Word document. The text/image can then be pasted onto a Word document on the same page or another page.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Highlight the text/image to be moved. Start by positioning the cursor displayed as an I-beam on the document. Highlight the text/image by

    1.Move I-beam to selection start point, depress left mouse button and drag to highlight desired text or

    2.“Anchor” I-beam at start point of desired text, move I-beam to end point, simultaneously depress “shift” button and left mouse button to select entire string of text.

  2. Step 2

    Selected text is copied or cut and placed on a virtual clipboard for pasting in another location. Select cut or copy on the Edit drop down menu.

  3. Step 3

    Copy Paste: Selected text is copied. Original stays in place. Copy may be pasted to another location (same page or another page/document).

  4. Step 4

    Cut Paste: Selected text is cut from original location. May be pasted in one or more new locations (same page or another page/document).

Tips & Warnings
  • One very useful application of Copy/Paste is on Internet research. Open a blank Word document. Copy text of interest on an Internet page to the Word document. At the end of your Internet research items of interest are on one Word document
  • Caution: It is easy to inadvertently erase text that is highlighted. This is not a disaster!!!!! Use the “Undo Typing” (left circular arrow) to step back to previous document(s).
