How to Sharpen Scissors with Aluminum Foil

I make a lot of Christmas stocking kits and my scissors take a beating from the felt. Paper is also one of the worst things to dull scissors. I don't want to buy new scissors every time they get dull. Nor do I have the time to take the scissors to be sharpened. It takes days to get the scissors back and can be expensive. Using aluminum foil is a quick fix and takes no time at all. It is a rather easy fix and doesn't require a lot of time nor money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A six inch piece of aluminum foil.
  • Scissors that need to be sharpened.
  1. Step 1

Tear off a six inch piece of aluminum foil and fold.

  2. Step 2

Fold over (as if you were making a paper fan) the piece of foil several times until the foil is thick.

  3. Step 3

Cut along the longest edge of the foil with the scissors that need to be sharpened. Cut several times through the thick foil. If you need to have the tip of the scissors sharpened, snip the foil with the tip of the scissors. Test on a piece of felt or thread. Repeat if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the scissors still seem dull, try the steps again or take scissors to be sharpened by a professional.
  • Keep one pair of scissors for paper cutting and another for crafts or sewing.
  • Using scissors to cut paper will dull them quickly.
  • Scissors are sharp and can cut fingers.

on 9/21/2009 This is such a brilliant idea! We have six pairs of scissors in our home and most of them are dulled. Everytime one gets dulled, we buy another pair. Can you imagine? LOL!

I'm going to try out this idea right away. Your article is going to save me so much money.

Five stars! And a recommendation. Please keep writing. Can't wait to read more of your articles.

on 9/4/2009 Thanks for all the "good" responses. It was one of the first articles I wrote and I wasn't sure if it would be read or helpful. I knew that it worked for me and you might try cutting the foil again. If you have put off sharpening your scissors for a while, you might try it again or maybe three times. But I too was surprised how well it work
