How to setup FileZilla client with an SSH encrypted connection

This guide will teach you how to setup a simple FTP or a more advanced SFTP/FTPS connection.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Download FileZilla!
  • Destination IP & Port
  • Username/Password
  • SSH Key/SSL Cert
  1. Step 1
     

    Install the client software.

    Supported platforms include:

    *Windows XP/Vista/7
    *Mac OSX 10.5+ (Both Intel & PPC)
    *Linux Debian 5.0 (Lenny)

  2. Step 2
     

    After install completes, run FileZilla.

    Click File, Site Manager, New Site.


    Select new site, type a name you can associate connection to.
    (EXAMPLE: Work FTP)

  3. Step 3
     

    In host field, type in the destination address & port number.



    Under Servertype, select the connection method (Normal Is FTP)
    *Advanced is SFTP for SSH or FTPS for SSL*
    **SSH WILL THEN COMPLETE THE STEPS**

  4. Step 4
     

    For Logintype choose Normal.
    Type in your vaild Username/Password.

  5. Step 5
     

    Click Okay, NOT Connect.
    From main screen click edit, then settings.
    Once settings is open select SFTP.

  6. Step 6
     

    Click Add Keyfile.

    Browse to the downloaded key file.

    If it is password protected, enter the password.

    Some keyfiles need to be converted to a .ppk file. This is no problem at all just click OK and specify a location to save the converted key. Then select OK.

  7. Step 7
     

    Underneath the file menu there is an icon. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of this icon and choose which site you would like to connect to. If the settings are correct, your in. Happy Downloading!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always keep FileZilla up-to-date, Downloading new versions and installing them will not make you loose your settings!
  • Be careful of downloading material that may not be allowed by ISP, unless you have 4,096 bit SSH encryption of course ;-P
  • Try not to use known port numbers for security purposes.
