Step 1
Think about your child -- does she jump right into things? Does he sit back and watch? Does she fear the unknown or enjoy surprises? Use this knowledge to anticipate your child's reaction to that first day.
-
Step 2
For example, if your child loves surprises, talk to them about how the school day is filled with good surprises, happy moments. If your child is fearful in a crowd, emphasize the solitary nature of some school activities -- looking at books, listening to books on tape, arts. If your child loves a schedule, tell them about the structured nature of the day -- first is circle time, next is story time, etc. If your child is gregarious, emphasize the many other kids who will be around. And if all else fails, tell them about recess!!!
-
Step 3
If they can pack their lunch, let them pick out their "favorite" at the store -- perhaps a pre-packaged lunch that you rarely ever buy due to expense/nutritional concerns. Sometimes, just looking forward to the lunch alone as a new, special treat, is enough!
-
Step 4
Let them help buy school supplies; engage them in the process. If possible, let them pick out their own lunch box/backpack. Encourage the, "You are a big girl/boy now!" line of thought.
-
Step 5
Find out from your child's teacher if there is a structure in place (most kindergarten teachers set up very structured schedules, which helps the child adjust since they can anticipate what is coming) -- and use the same terms at home to familiarize the child with these terms -- "circle time", "free time", etc.
-
Step 6
Visit the school BEFORE orientation if you have time, just so he/she can make their first time there a relaxed, VERY low-key event. Visit the playground and have a picnic lunch there.
-
Step 7
Try to arrange, through the school, for a playdate with other classmates before school starts so they have a face to look forward to seeing.
-
Step 8
ABOVE ALL, be positive and don't let them see or know that you have even the slightest concern. They will take that slight concern and magnify it in their minds -- be positive, excited, happy about going to school!
