Step 1
Affordability
Living with a roommate is usually a great way to lower your monthly rent payment. However, make sure you settle financial arrangements in advance. Who will pay for utilities, internet, and cable? A common mistake is one person carrying the whole load and having their roommates reimburse them each month. Do not do this! Do not put your name on all of the bills because then you are liable even if a roommate suddenly moves out. Make sure to divide responsibility evenly. -
Step 2
Compatibility
Find a roommate who is compatible is the most important aspect when considering a new roommate. With this being said, it is important to screen your future roommate with a questionnaire. Don’t worry about being invasive with your questions. If this is a random roommate, you are depending on them to pay monthly rent, so it’s in your best interest to find the right fit. The follwing are some questions to consider:
Do you have pets?
Do you smoke?
Are you clean?
Where did you live last? Why did you leave?
Do you work?
What do you do on an average day? -
Step 3
Good luck with the roommate search. It’s a tough process, but definitely worth it when you find the right roommate.
