Are you needing to find a lawyer who will work for free? Here are some tips on how to locate an attorney who handles pro bono cases.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone
  • Computer
  • Lots of Patience
  1. Step 1

Start by calling 211 from a Landline Phone. (Click on the 211 article at the bottom.) Ask the 211 worker for referrals for legal aid and pro-bono lawyers.

  2. Step 2

The next step is to check out a list of pro bono attorneys and legal services in your state. Visit the American Bar Association Web Site at http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/probono/directory.html#.

  3. Step 3

If neither of the above steps help, call local attorneys in the area and ask if they take pro bono cases. If possible, try to contact younger (recent graduates) attorneys first.

  4. Step 4

You might also ask for advice on legal forums such as www.expertlaw.com.

  5. Step 5

If you have a particularly unique or heart felt case, and still cannot find a pro bono attorney, try posting free ads on www.craigslist.org for help with finding a pro bono attorney.
