Cleaning a tanning bed doesn't mean you have to buy expensive cleaning supplies from the manufacturer. In fact, you can make your own tanning bed cleaner for mere pennies. It works just as well as its commercial counterpart and will last for months. If you do prefer the available cleaners, this homemade version is great to use when you're in a pinch and the tanning bed really needs a good cleaning.

    Things You'll Need

    • White distilled vinegar
    • Spray bottle
    • Tea tree essential oil
    • Lemon juice (optional)
    • Paper towels or cloth
      • 1

Combine equal parts water and white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake well to combine, and then add a few drops of tea tree essential oil. Tea tree is a disinfectant and will kill germs on the surface of the bed. As a general rule, use approximately two drops per cup of liquid. Look on the side of the bottle for measurements if you aren't sure.

Add a few teaspoons of lemon juice to the bottle, if desired. Lemon juice will leave behind a pleasant scent, and it is also a powerful natural antibacterial substance. This will add to the germ killing power of your tanning bed cleaner.

Label the bottle with the contents, and store in a cool, dry place until ready for use. This tanning bed cleaner will keep indefinitely if properly stored. You can even whip up a large batch in a gallon jug and refill your spray bottle as necessary.

Apply the tanning bed cleaner by spraying directly onto the surface, just as you would a commercial product. Wipe away any excess solution with a paper towel or soft cotton cloth.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you don't like the smell of tea tree oil or if it isn't available, use any other disinfectant essential oil to make your homemade tanning bed cleaner. Lemon, lavender and eucalyptus are all suitable for this purpose.

    • White vinegar and water may be used alone, if absolutely necessary. This solution will clean the tanning bed sufficiently, but you won't have the extra germ killing properties of the other ingredients.

    • Do not use rubbing alcohol or alcohol-based cleaners on your tanning bed. These substances may crack or warp the glass.
