Steaming is a healthy way to cook vegetables. Often, when vegetables are boiled or microwaved a good portion of their vitamins and minerals escape. Steaming helps retain the essential nutrients during cooking.

A metal vegetable steamer is a simple way to steam your vegetables and allows you to cook them to your desired tenderness.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • metal vegetable steamer
  • pot that the steamer fits into
  • vegetables to cook
  • water
  1. Step 1

Prepare your vegetables as your normally do for cooking. If you usually add seasonings to your veggies, do so now.

  2. Step 2

Add water to the pot to just below the steamer. There should be enough water for it to boil, allowing the steam to escape and cook the vegetables. However, the vegetables should not be resting in the water. The steamer should hold the vegetables just above the water level.

  3. Step 3
Steamer is expanded to width of the pot.

Place your steamer into a pot so that it expands to hold the amount of vegetables you will be steaming. The metal vegetable steamer should fit snugly in the pot, and be fully expanded.

  4. Step 4

Lay your vegetables on the metal steamer. Spread them out so that they are in one flat layer. If possible, put a little space between the vegetables so that the steam can cook the veggies thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

    Cook until your desired tenderness.
