Tie a Square Knot (with photos!)

Everyone should learn how to tie a square knot if they ever deal with ropes or lines. Every boy scout learns the knot, as does every sailor.

It's a good knot for tieing a package string, although it may part (come undone) under a heavy load or strain.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cross the two loose ends by placing the right side over the left. (Right over left)

  2. Step 2

Tuck the piece you were just moving under and around the line the didn't move. (Left goes under.)

  3. Step 3

Now cross the lines again, with the left going over the right. (Left over right)

  4. Step 4

Tuck this piece under and around. (Right goes under.)

  5. Step 5

So basically there is only one end of the line that does all the moving around. The other end just kind of stays out of the way.

The phrase to remember is: Right over left, left goes under. Left over right, right goes under.

When complete and correctly tied, the two loops you made should slide freely over each other.
    Tighten.

When made complete and correctly, both end pieces will be on the same side of the knot, unlike a Thief's Knot. (See link.)

See the How to Tie a Thief's Knot article.
