How to find your static IP address

A static IP address is a computer's address while surfing the Internet. An Internet service provider assigns IP addresses. A static address is permanent; a dynamic IP address changes each time the computer accesses the Internet. You have a couple of options if you want to know your computer's static IP address.

Step 1

Open the command prompt in Windows on your computer by clicking on "Start" in the lower left corner of your PC screen. Choose "Run" from the menu. Type in "Cmd" in the dialog box that appears.

Type "ipconfig" in the command prompt -- without quotation marks -- and hit "Return." Your static IP address will be displayed in the command prompt.

Step 3

Visit a website such as What Is My IP Address? to find out what your computer's IP address is. As soon as the home page loads, you will see the IP address.
