If you find that your cloth diaper is leaking more than usual you may have a problem with detergent residue buildup. The residue keeps the fibers of the insert from absorbing liquid. This is also beneficial for diapers that have a stinky smell.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dawn dish detergent
  • Bleach (optional)
  1. Step 1

Prepare diapers as usual by fastening laundry tabs and removing and unsnapping inserts.

  2. Step 2

Run a cold water rinse or wash cycle to remove any excess waste from diapers.

  3. Step 3

Run diapers through a long hot water wash cycle, adding 1 tablespoon of original Dawn dish detergent. Optionally, you can also add 1/4 - 1/2 cup of bleach to sanitize your diapers and inserts.

  4. Step 4

Run the diapers through two more hot water wash cycles without any detergent to help remove the soap.

  5. Step 5

Continue running the diapers through rinse cycles until there are no more suds in the water.

  6. Step 6

When rinse water is free of suds, you can either tumble dry or hang dry as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rinsing is the single most important thing when caring for your diapers. All traces of detergent need to be out of the diapers in order for them to do their job.
  • Do not bleach diapers with each washing, only use it occasionally.
