Identify an Emotionally Abusive Person
Identify an Emotionally Abusive Person

Ask yourself these questions to find out if you are involved with an emotionally abusive person!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

No two emotionally abusive people are the same, but they do have certain behavior in common. To find out if you are involved with an emotionally abusive person, ask yourself?

    Does that person:

    1. Make comments to you that make you feel bad?

    2. Blame YOU when you don't meet THEIR expectations?

    3. Blame YOU when they are unhappy?

    4. Belittle your accomplishments?

    5. Belittle YOUR efforts to make THEM happy?

    6. Compare YOU unfairly with OTHERS?

    7. Disrespect YOU?

    8. Tell you that whatever YOU do is never right?

    9. Tell you that whatever YOU say is never right?

    10. Attack YOU for no reason.

    11. Keep YOU always on the defensive.

  2. Step 2

The more questions you answered "yes" to, the more you can be sure that you are dealing with an emotionally abusive person.

These people are NOT hard to find. Here's a short list of those who can be emotionally abusive:

    1. Your parent.
    2. Your spouse.
    3. Your child.
    4. Your sister or brother.
    5. Your friend.
    6. Your boss.

  3. Step 3

The easy part is to spot them. The hard part is to deal with them. The best action would be to stop dealing with them altogether or reduce your contact with them, but often this is very hard to do. Recognize that you are dealing with a monster, not a normal person.

on 8/27/2009 Linda, this is important information for men and women, alike. Men are, simply, less willing to admit that they have been involved with an emotionally abusive monster. Well done! It's a *5* I look forward to reading more of your articles...
