Take your Jar and fill it up two thirds with oil and fill the rest of the jar with water. Now, open your food coloring dyes and add in one or add in a few drops of liquid food coloring. Now, cut your Alka Seltzer tablets into 6-8 pieces and drop one or two of them into the jar. You should start to see bubbles forming.

When the bubbles die down, add more antacid pieces and shake the container. (Make sure the lid is on) This will keep the bubbles going. To light up the lava, use your flashlight and position it so it lights up your glass container. You have just made your first lava lamp! This experiment is great for kids, but always supervise them and never leave them unattended.

Here's the science snapshot behind this project.
Oil and Water do not mix so the oil stays on the top while the water sinks to the bottom. The antacid tablets create carbon dioxide and that is how the bubbles are formed. The food coloring adds the cool effect and illusion and when the bubbles formed from the antacid tablets reach the top of the container, they burst and then sink back to the bottom. New reactions continue to occur. Keep adding the antacids and enjoy the magic!
