Making a perfect heart for your craft project is easy.

Making a perfect heart shape out of paper requires creating symmetrical sides. Heart shapes are commonly used in projects like scrapbooks, greeting cards, specialty notes, labels and gift items. In arts and crafts, the basic form of a heart features two sides that connect to each other using curved lines. The symmetry of these two sides and how each line glides through when forming the shape makes it pleasing to the eye.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a sheet of paper vertically in half so that the heart is symmetrical when completed.

    • 2

Draw a guide on one side of the folded paper using pencil or pen. This marking should be free-flowing, moving from the bottom end of the fold up in a diagonal, V-like direction. However, instead of drawing a straight line to the upper opposite corner of the paper, curve the line as you near the top of the paper.

    • 3

Allow the curving line to form an arc that will serve as the top part of one side of the heart. Move your pencil down toward the fold of the paper again. You should end up with a shape that looks like half of a heart.

    • 4

Cut the paper by following the shape you made.

    • 5

Open the cut paper to reveal a perfectly symmetrical heart.

Tips & Warnings

  • When forming and marking one side of the shape on a folded paper, always visualize how it would look when unfolded.

  • Some people prefer to make a heart starting from the top and moving down. In this case, reverse the way in which you trace the heart shape onto the paper.

  • You may also decorate the heart with markers, crayons, keepsake papers or other accessories.
