Having a privacy fence doesn't mean you have to look at bare wood. follow along and learn how to dress up the fence from your view with natures help

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plants like roses, grapes. a spade, gloves, string or wire nails
  1. Step 1

The first step to making your fence into a garden is the design. Get mental image of what you want the fence to look like. Do you want roses or just greenery, Do you want to attract birds? do you want fruit.

With the image in mind determine what the ground is like; Sandy and easy to dig in, rocky (will I have to remove them), Roots from old bushes or trees. This will allow you to space the different plants.

  2. Step 2

Now that you have your idea it is time to go to work. If Roses are to be used your will want climbing plants. If you use bush roses they will have to be trimmed more often. Plants should be spaced to allow for expansion. i would say about 3 feet between them would be good. if you want a thicker cover put them closer together.

If you are using grapes you will only need one or two plants. Each year you can trim off a shoot and plant it. It is less costly and will insure the same variety. Be sure to pick a variety that will grow in your climate zone. The birds will eat most of the berries before you get a chance to pick them unless you protect them with a mesh cover.

  3. Step 3

As the plants grow and spread out you will need to trim them. if you have a friendly neighbor they may not mind your grapes or roses coming over the top, but be sure you know before allowing them to converge on their side of the fence.

Some types of roses will grow and attach to the fence, other types will have long limp limbs that will require you to tie them to the fence. Be sure that each year you cut back the old dead lines so new ones have room to grow.

With roses you also must be aware they are full of thorns. I would not recommend planting the dropping kind along pathways near the fence.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plant a variety of clinging plants to see which give you the most color. If you enjoy birds plants with berries will attract them in droves.
  • Remember with plants you will have bees, bless the bees for they will pollinate your plants, but be careful not to get to close and get stung.
