The "freshman 15" is a popular term and refers to the 15 pounds many freshman put on in their first year of college. The freshman 15 is usually attributed to an increase in drinking and eating habits that are not the healthiest. This article will outline how to avoid putting on the freshman 15.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To avoid putting on the freshman 15 the first step is to make sure to not get out of control. This means not drinking in excessive amounts to celebrate the four years of college you have coming up before you have to enter the real world. Many students in college drink, this is just reality, but do not take the drinking to an extreme. Your grades will most certainly suffer if you are drinking too much and your health will as well. Excessive drinking is a big reason many people gain the freshman 15, keep the drinking under control and it will be much easier to keep your weight under control as well.

  2. Step 2

The second step to avoid putting on the freshman 15 is to eat a healthy diet. This can be more difficult in college where junk food can be prevalent, and it is easier for a busy student to grab a bag of chips instead of make a healthy meal. To avoid gaining the freshman 15 you need to incorporate healthy foods into your diet. This can be as easy as having an apple for a snack, eating your sandwiches on whole wheat bread, and drinking plenty of water instead of just soda and beer. It is the small things that can make a big difference, so by incorporating healthy snacks, and staying away from a fast food diet you can avoid the freshman 15.

  3. Step 3

The third step to avoid putting on the freshman 15 is to make sure you are getting enough sleep at night. Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, but it can be difficult to get enough sleep as many students in college have great demands on their time and are very busy with activities. So make sure to plan enough sleep for yourself. If that means skipping a party, or not staying up for the basketball game, those are the sacrifices you may have to make .... but in the long run your health and avoiding the freshman 15 is more important.
