Soft, medium, or firm? Down, down-alternative, or foam? When it comes to choosing pillows for your bed, there can be dozens of options to choose from. To learn how to buy pillows that are right for you, read on!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    CHOOSE A DENSITY LEVEL
Generally speaking, to keep your neck and spine better aligned the pillow density that you select should be compatible with your predominant sleeping style. For side sleepers, a firm pillow can help to relieve neck and shoulder stress. For back sleepers, medium density pillows are usually the most comfortable. For stomach sleepers, a soft fill will help to keep your head at a comfortable angle. If you change positions frequently throughout the night, try either a medium density pillow, or switch to memory foam construction.

  2. Step 2

    CONSIDER ALLERGY REQUIREMENTS
If you suffer from dust or dust-related allergies, it's important to choose a hypoallergenic pillow to help mitigate the effects. Several options are available, including memory foam, synthetic down, and microfiber fill. Choose one in the proper density and be sure it has a tightly woven cotton shell. Pair it with a zippered pillow protector to maximize the allergy barrier.

  3. Step 3

    ASSESS SLEEP CONCERNS
Many doctors and chiropractors recommend specialized pillows to help with specific sleep concerns. For apnea sufferers and others who sleep with a CPAP mask, a specially designed pillow (for example, the SleePap model) can help to keep the mask in place. For spinal pain, a contoured foam pillow or a gel-filled one to help to relieve pressures. Contoured pillows can also be a good help for chronic snoring by helping to keep air passageways open.

  4. Step 4

SELECT THE BEST QUALITY YOU CAN AFFORD
When it comes to pillows, you often get what you pay for. Higher-priced pillows often come with a more tightly woven cover and a higher grade of fill. Except for foam pillows, most high quality pillows can be either machine washed or dry-cleaned without damaging the pillow, which will help to extend their life. They will also maintain their shape better over time than a cheaper model will. You will pay more initially, but you'll save money in replacement costs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use a pillow protector between your pillow and pillowcase.
  • If you suffer from allergies, wash or dry clean your pillows a few times a year.
  • For apnea and other sleep concerns, speak with your physician about pillow options.
