Get what you want in your relationship
Get what you want in your relationship

Each person in a relationship has their own goals, hopes and dreams. However, you want to be sure that your partner is clear of yours (and you know theirs) so that you can work together to achieve them.

Better yet, if you are a good enough advocate for yourself (and respect your partner) you might just end up getting exactly what you want.

Here are some tips on how to accomplish that.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know what it is that you want, and write it down. This way, you have a written record of what it is that you would like to accomplish, and can share that with your partner so the two of you can come up with a plan on how to do it.

  2. Step 2

Be open to your partner's views and opinions of your goals. They deal with you on a regular basis, and will also know you really well. Not only that, but your better half also cares about you, so chances are, they will have useful tips on how you can achieve your goal. Even if you end up not using their advice, at least they will know you listened, and will be willing to back you.

  3. Step 3

Keep the lines of communication open. Talk to your partner and update them on where you are with what you want, and what they can do to help. If they feel like they are an important part of your dream, they will do their best to help you get what you want.

  4. Step 4

If what you want refers directly to the relationship (you would like to go on vacations more often, you would like to get flowers, etc..) then have a frank conversation with your partner stating what you want. Follow up every once in a while with subtle hints and acknowledge and encourage the behavior you want by offering praise and gratitude.
