This is not an article about which coffee blend tastes the best. But rather the truly proper way to prepare coffee. Follow these directions just once, and I promise - you'll throw away that Mr. Coffee percolating nightmare in no time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A French-Press
  • A LARGE coffee cup
  • A heat-proof glass measuring jug
  • Whole bean coffee
  • A burr grinder
  • Purified water

    Inside a burr-style grinder

Start with the same wonderful coffee beans you have decided are your personal favorite. There are so many preferences it isn't even worth discussing what type or blend is the best. For French Press coffee, an even grind is a very important step, and a burr style grinder is commonly known to provide the best grind when using whole bean coffee. You will need about 3.5 level tablespoons per 8 ounces of water. You may want to measure out how much liquid your favorite cup holds. Do yourself a favor - be precise.

  2. Step 2
    Glass measuring jug

    Glass measuring jug

Using purified water, measure out twice the amount of water you will need into a heat-proof glass measuring jug. This jug needs to be microwave safe and should only ever be used to heat water - you don't want to mix other flavors in with your coffee.

  3. Step 3
    Ground coffee

Heat the water to just below the boiling point - about 200 degrees F. You'll want to let it cool for 30 seconds before pouring. In this time, measure out the EXACT amount of grounds needed according the measurements listed in step 1, and dump them into the bottom of your French Press.

  4. Step 4

Pour in the water slowly, in a thin stream, over the pile of grounds at the bottom of the press. Stir slowly for 10 seconds with a wooden spoon (you don't want to risk breaking your new love with silverware). Now let it steep for 3 minutes (time it) before placing your stem into the press. Press slowly down on the plunger, taking your time with it. If you depress the plunger fully in anything less than 60 seconds you are in way to much of a hurry for coffee this good. Try setting your alarm clock 5 minutes earlier tomorrow, and doing right next time.

  5. Step 5

Leave it sit for at least another three minutes, with the top closed so it can't yet breath. Now pour yourself a cup of the best java you've ever encountered.

    E - N - J - O - Y!

Tips & Warnings
  • For best results - measure, don't guess. And use a timer.
  • Never use your measuring jug or stirring spoon for anything but coffee. Keep it pure - you'll be glad you did.
  • For your first experience with this coffee, don't ruin it with flavored creamers and sweeteners. Just try, for maybe the first time in your life, the way coffee is supposed to taste.
