Now that airlines are charging for checked luggage, more people are traveling with carry on luggage only. Most airlines allow for at least two pieces of luggage to be carried on to the plane. Each item must fit into the overhead bin or beneath the seat in front of you. Although the idea of packing for a couple weeks with only two small pieces of luggage may not seem feasible, it is! Here's how to do it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Upright carry on luggage no more than 45" in total dimension
  • Carry on luggage no more than 36" in total dimension
  1. Step 1

Be sure the luggage you have is compliant with the carry on dimensions indicated by your airline. You can also find this info from the FAA here: http://www.faa.gov/passengers/prepare_fly/baggage/

  2. Step 2

Choose the outfits you want to bring with you. If you are more spontaneous or don't want to pre-coordinate your clothing, gather all the clothes, and shoes you want to bring.

  3. Step 3

Take each outfit you have assembled, lay the largest piece out first, then follow with each piece until the outfit is complete. Starting at one end, roll the outfit tightly until it resembles a cloth tube. Repeat with each outfit (or by type of article such as pants, shorts, shirts, dresses, etc).

  4. Step 4

Place each rolled outfit into your upright carry on until it is full. You should be able to fit about two weeks' worth of clothing.

  5. Step 5

Don't forget your undies and swimsuits! Pack these items together in a zip lock bag. This is especially helpful if you will be traveling to other countries as customs may be inspecting your luggage in front of other passengers.

  6. Step 6

Place each pair of shoes into a clean plastic bag (such as a shopping bag). If they are flat, up to three pairs should fit into the front pocket of your upright carry on.

  7. Step 7

For your smaller (suitcase, laptop, or purse sized) carry on, pack your flight documents, hotel reservations, trip itinerary, ID, credit/debit cards, light jacket, reading materials, snacks, and toiletries (remember NO liquids over 3 oz). For TSA guidelines on liquids check out: http://www.tsa.gov/311/

  8. Step 8

Enjoy your trip and the money you saved by not checking your bags!
