Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water Polo Balls
  • Water polo balls
  1. Step 1

Swim freestyle toward the goal with your head high and the ball in front of you.

  2. Step 2

Drop your hips to a 45-degree angle quickly and crouch so that you are ready to burst outward.

  3. Step 3

Use your weak hand to pop the ball into the air from underneath. Pop it up only slightly higher than you can reach.

  4. Step 4

Use a hard scissors kick to leap up and out of the water, extending your entire body and reaching up with your shooting arm for the ball.

  5. Step 5

Meet the ball at its high point with your shooting arm and push a quick shot on goal. Push the shot rather than slapping at it.

  6. Step 6

Follow through just as you would for the second half of a normal shot.

  7. Step 7

Continue swimming to chase after your shot. A blocked shot often results in a second opportunity.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a good shot to use when a defender is swimming behind you. When you hitch up to pop the ball into the air, the defender thinks you're going for the shot and may foul you from behind. If you're not holding the ball when you're fouled, the result is a free shot on goal: a 4-meter foul shot.
  • When you pop the ball into the air, you force the goalie to react. Keep a close eye on him or her and try to push your shot somewhere unexpected.
  • If you have any condition that could impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
