This is a fun activity for kids of most ages. Birds really do seem to love these This is also an inexpensive and easy project.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pine cone
  • bird seed
  • peanut butter
  • yarn or string
  1. Step 1

Take the string and tie it around the top of the pine cone. Make sure that it is tied fairly well since this is what you will use to tie the bird feeder up.

  2. Step 2

Be sure to explain to the children that pine cones can be pokey. Using a plastic knife, spoon or popsicle stick spread peanut butter over the pine cone, try to get some into the openings as well.

  3. Step 3

Now it's time for the bird seed. Either pour some bird seed on to a paper plate and roll the pine cone around or using a spoon pour the bird seed over the pine cone.

  4. Step 4

If this is a project done with a class or a group and you need to transport the bird feeders plastic wrap works great. Now find a good tree and tie the string or yarn to the branch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Peanut butter may attract other creatures, mostly ants and a few squirrels in my experience but if you live in a very rural area or an area where you have trouble with critters you may want to either avoid this project or remove the bird feeder at night!
